Chill Out This Summer

Summer time is fast approaching and that can only mean 1 thing…..

Feelin’ HOT, HOT, HOT!!!

It’s a good idea to be prepared for the upcoming warmer weather.

So my top pick for families and caregivers with children to help ensure a pleasant summer this year:

Keep cool….this means physically and emotionally.

I know myself, I hate being so uncomfortably hot that I get cranky, sometimes tired and irrational.

Children are no different. A hot child will be unhappy and irritable, and this will be reflected in their behaviour! 

One idea is to find a space in your living environment that is cool and make this known as a place where your child can go to CHILL OUT.

  • Set up a mat, pillows or a bean bag,
  • Use a fan if it’s indoors,
  • If outdoors, make it a nice shady, breezy place,
  • Have some magazines or books there,
  • Perhaps a puzzle or other items that interest your child,
  • Take an iced water bottle,

Encourage your child to spend a little time in this space time throughout the day. 10 or 15 minutes is enough to relax, cool down, and have a little refresh.

You may want to go to this space with your child, or alone, flick through a magazine and let your bodies take a rest.

Try to keep your calm when you are feeling irritated. Speaking calmly to a child helps the situation to stay calm…hopefully avoiding an argument or tantrum. Breathe deeply, and think about what you are going to say before you say it.

It’s also great to send the kids outside to play in the early morning or late afternoon, cause I’m telling you now that sun is gonna be a scorcher!!
