Make Your Pinky Promise

7 June, 2015

Do you know what scares me the most about cancer?

It is it’s ability to tear a fabulous individual from their friends and families in the prime of their life.  It makes me feel sick to the core that Husband’s grow old without their wives, children grow up with out their Dad cheering them on at their weekend sport and that best friends no longer have their kindred spirit to hang out with, do coffee and take on the world together.

One of my dearest friends, Julie carries the BRAC1 gene mutation.  For those that aren’t aware of the horrible statistics surrounding this gene mutation you can read about that here.

Julie isn’t just my friend, she is a loving partner, a beautiful Mum and Step-Mum, a sister, an aunt, a daughter and Lil D’s Family Day Care Mum.  To all of the people in Julie’s life, she is a pretty BIG DEAL.

The thought of her not growing old with us all certainly isn’t something I ever wanted to imagine.  So 18 months ago, she undertook drastic surgery to decrease her risk of being diagnosed with Breast and Or Ovarian Cancer.

You can read about Julie’s story here.

The commitment Julie made to the health of her own body and sacrifices she has subsequently made, still makes me personally teary.  I cannot image a life without my boobs.  Honestly!  I rarely even give it a second thought.  They just hang about mostly doing their thing.  But a life without them?  Nope I cannot image.

Julie and I made our Pinky Promise today.  She pretty much had made hers a couple of years ago though.

We promised each other that we will always to take control of your our own health.

By doing that we will :

* exercise regularly

* eat healthy foods

* reduce alcohol intake

* not smoke

* investigate our family health history

* and regularly have screening for cancer ie. mammograms, pap smears etc

For you to make your own Pinky Promise right now head over to the Pinky Promise website.  For making your Pinky Promise, you will have a chance to win a trip to New York for you and your BFF.
