The Top Tips For Spring Racing 2014

15 August, 2014

Spring is just around the corner and according to Rachael from Fascinators Direct, right now is the perfect time to start your Spring Racing 2014 Fashion planning.

Being that with each racing season new trends arise, I asked Rachel some questions to help us make the big decisions of what to wear easier.

What are the hottest colour combinations for this years racing season?

Pastels are the hottest colour trend this year. Think Powder Blue, Coral, Apricot, Lemon, Mint Green, Lavender but the main difference is this year colour blocking is preferred. Take a Coral Dress and match it with a beige fascinator and handbag – you are onto a winner. Florals will be huge so pastel florals will be even better. Monochrome will also feature heavily.

Should we be looking at classic dresses or more on trend statement items?

We will be seeing a resurgence of 1950’s fashion this year in the dresses and hairstyles. Think ‘Betty Draper’ ‘Mad Men’, pencil skirts, full a-line skirts, gorgeous laces, brooches, duster coats and pillbox hats– looks made famous by screen sirens Elizabeth Taylor, Audrey Hepburn, and Marilyn Monroe.

Are we still colour blocking this year or can we launch into patterns and florals?

Floral prints will be the most popular. For the bolder gals amongst us clashing prints will produce maximum effect.

Is dress length important?

Traditionally, Yes. Ladies were required to wear dresses no higher than just below the knee to the racetracks of Australia and this is still a strict dress code at Royal Ascot – Europe’s equivalent to our Melbourne Cup. But thanks to fashion liberation and our kinder climate, here in Australia dress length are up to the individual.

Other than a fabulous hat or fascinator that matches your outfit beautifully what other accessories do you recommend?

Shoes – strappy heels and open toe platform styles in flesh, nude tones and mock snake skin are this season’s must have shoes.
Handbags over clutch bags. Clutch bag looks great but are not a practical choice for a day at the races where the contents of your bag consists of form guide, make-up, money, phone, house keys etc, all the while juggling a champagne glass. Opt for a bag with a small handle that you can saddle over your wrist.
